Let's suppose you would like to download a large file over night and you want your computer to shut down when the download is complete. Or you would like to fall asleep while listening to your favorite music and, again, you want your computer to shut down by itself after some time. The Windows operating system features some options for turning off the display or the hard disks after a specified amount of time but not for turning off the computer. Despite the name of the program, it does not only allow turning off the computer, but also a lot more actions, like logging off or putting the computer into standby using various settings.

The installation process of Chameleon Shutdown is as simple as other Windows installers. As such, it completes very fast and requires little intervention from the user. Furthermore, it can run on most versions of Windows, including XP and Windows 7.

The interface of Chameleon Shutdown features some big graphical buttons, each one of them allowing the user to perform a certain action, like shutting down, restarting, hibernating or putting the computer into standby. Placing the mouse over any of these buttons will display two choices, either performing the actions immediately or customizing it. Thus, the PC can be set to turn off or enter standby at a certain hour or after a specific amount of time has passed. Furthermore, it can be set to shut down when the CPU is not used or after a certain program has been terminated. These conditions can be combined or can be set separately.
